In Person Volunteer Opportunities

Help plan library programs, earn community service, and meet new people.

Assist library staff during the Scrabble Tournament.

Community Service hours will be provided.

We are partnering up with Brookhaven Free Library to clean local streets! Meet at either South Country Library or Brookhaven Free Library to join your neighbors and help make a difference. All supplies will be provided and participants will be invited to meet back at Brookhaven Free Library for a thank-you brunch at 11:00 AM.

Please register. Volunteer hours will be given to teens participating.

Authors Unlimited 2026 will be taking place on Saturday, May 2nd at St. Joe’s University! It’s a free program that celebrates reading by connecting teens and authors. Attendees will get the chance to meet dynamic authors of young adult literature first at an author panel and then in solo sessions. Attendees can earn three hours of community service credit for attending and then filling out a survey at the end of the day. You can find AU on Twitter @AuthorsUnlim!

Food Donation Volunteers

Food Donation Volunteers

Help us fill our pantry for those in need. Bring in 5 items of non perishable, non expired food items to donate. All items must be unopened and undamaged. For every 5 items you will receive 1 hour of community service. You are permitted to earn up to 2 hours a month by donating food.
All food donations must be brought to the Reference Desk by the TEEN (and not a parent/adult) to receive credit.
Please allow 1 week for your community service letter to be emailed.

Read a new YA Book (fiction, non-fiction, graphic novel, e-book or audiobook). Submit a review to earn a certificate for 2 community service hours. You can do a maximum of 1 book review a month. Books can be found in the library catalog or on Overdrive Please fill out the review form online.

Please note: Reviews on Manga will no longer be accepted for Community Service.

All reviews are checked for plagiarism and AI assistance. If there is reason to believe that the review is not your own, you will not receive any credit.

Movie Reviews

Complete a movie review from the library’s two streaming services, Kanopy or Hoopla, and receive 2 hours of community service.
You may do a maximum of one review a month.

Recycle Challenge

Earn community service by recycling! Collect empty bottles and cans and return them to your local supermarket to recycle. For every 20 bottles/cans you recycle, you will receive 1 hour of community service.
You can earn a maximum of 3 hours of Community service a month.
*You will need to log in with a Google account. If you do not have one you can email your photos along with your name, phone number, South Country Library card number to teen@sctylib.org with the Subject: Recycle Challenge.

Project Green Teen

Kits are available to check out at the Patron Service Desk

Help clean up our community while earning community service credit. Borrow a kit, complete with the necessary tools to pick up trash, using one of the provided trash bags, take a selfie with it, and email the Teen librarian for 2 hours of community service! Kits must be checked out with a Young Adult South Country Library card.

  • All Community Service opportunities are for South Country Library patrons only. All others seeking community service hours must visit their home library.
  • Volunteers will receive a community service letter for the amount of hours volunteered for each program. Lost or misplaced letters will not be replaced. It is the responsibility of the Young Adult not library staff to keep track of their own volunteer hours.
  • Any paperwork needed to be signed can be done so Monday to Thursday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the Young Adult Desk, unless prior arrangements have been made. Please call ahead to ensure someone is available.
  • All requests for additional community service projects beyond what is offered must be made at least one week in advance to the YA Librarian. Additional projects are not always available and depend on the library’s needs.
  • While the South Country Library offers various community service opportunities, we can not guarantee that the hours earned will be accepted. Please check with the organization to ensure that opportunities are acceptable and meet volunteer requirements.
