Flood Updates

January 25, 2018

It has been just over 2 weeks now since the incident and we are making the best of a difficult situation! As previously mentioned we have temporarily set up the Children’s Department in the Large Print room. Our librarians are stationed there and ready to answer any questions you may have or to interloan any materials you may need. There are a couple of gaming computers in the area as well as a select number of books and play materials. Children are also able to sign on to the Internet computers in our YA area if they have Internet permission on their library cards. In the meantime, the process of repairs have begun in the Children’s Department as well as the review of materials to assess what can be kept/stored and what is no longer usable. Besides the necessary repairs, we are taking this opportunity to give the department an overdue face-lift which we think will improve the look and function of the space.  Fortunately, between insurance coverage and years of careful budgeting we are able to manage this within our current operating budget. However, if you wish to donate money to assist with the repair and improvements, please click here (be sure to select South Country Library from the drop down menu). We are very grateful for the outpouring of support and offers of help we’ve received; a donation is certainly not necessary but is greatly appreciated. As the repairs progress and we get a better idea of when we may be able to reopen the Children’s wing, we will relay that information here and on our Facebook page.

Thankfully, based on our preliminary information, we believe that the damage done will be a lot less severe than we initially feared. We were able to reopen to the public yesterday, Thursday, January 11, although it will take some time before we can reopen the Children’s Department. In the interim our Children’s Department will be operating from the Large Print room although collection availability and services may  be limited for awhile. Some collections have been shifted around as well, if you need any help finding any books though, please speak to a member of our staff and we’ll direct you where to go. We would like to express sincere thanks to Chevalley Enterprises Plumbing & Heating, Advanced Restoration Corporation, and Marylou & Peter from Bellport Village for working closely and diligently with us all day on Wednesday to get clearance to reopen. We are also truly blessed to have such a wonderful staff here at the library who have exhibited tremendous teamwork in dealing with the myriad issues associated with such a major incident. We are determined that the Children’s Department will be back and better than ever, it’s just a matter of time, so please bear with us while we made any necessary repairs to the building.

January 8th, 2018

During the day a faulty sprinkler head flooded our Children’s Department including the Children’s Program Room as well as several offices. We are sick over the damage that our beloved Children’s Room has sustained and we are determined to come back better than ever as quickly as possible! It will take time and we hope you’ll bear with us as there may be limitations in services or collections for a period of time. The library will remain closed until it is deemed safe for the public to come back but rest assured we are working hard behind the scenes to reopen and to fix the damage. We appreciate the outpouring of support we’ve received regarding this incident and will keep you informed here and on Facebook of our progress and any changes. Thank you all again for your patience and understanding as we begin this painstaking task!
